The Eaton Street Apartments, a five-story mixed-use project that will house 118 affordable housing units, breaks ground at 8855 Eaton Street in Downtown Westminster today. The project will wrap the north and east sides of the parking garage and will feature four stories of residential units over a ground floor common area and townhomes, as well as 22,000 square feet of retail along Eaton Street and 89th Avenue.

The City of Westminster is working with Mile High Development, Koelbel and Company, and Longs Peak Advisors to complete this project by late 2018. The Jefferson County Housing Authority and the Colorado Housing and Finance Authority provided additional financial support to the project

“These units will serve residents earning 60 percent or less of the area median income, or approximately $50,000 annually for a household of four,” said Sarah Nurmela, Downtown Westminster Real Estate and Development Manager. “This project serves a larger goal of ensuring that Downtown Westminster is inclusive and meets the needs of the entire community.”

The development of the Eaton Street Apartments moves the City closer to its goal of having 20% of the housing in Downtown Westminster be affordable and/or workforce housing.

“Now more than ever are we in need of more affordable and workforce housing,” said Westminster Mayor Herb Atchison. “The metro Denver area has seen unprecedented population growth and rising housing costs in the last five years, and unfortunately Westminster is not immune to this issue.”

Since 2015, the City’s Strategic Plan has articulated a goal of becoming a regional leader in providing affordable housing. Over the last couple years, that goal has evolved into a vision that includes serving the lowest income residents, as well as meeting the needs of Westminster’s workforce.
