ENGIE Services Inc. and the City of Westminster, Colorado are proud to announce an exclusive partnership to provide strategic energy solutions for the innovative Westminster Reduced Energy District (WRED) project.

ENGIE, a global leader in district heating and cooling services, will work in close collaboration with the City of Westminster and prospective developers to create custom, cutting-edge Distributed Energy Solutions that provide a positive economic and environmentally sustainable impact on this new community. ENGIE will design, build, own, operate and maintain the district heating and cooling system which will consist of technologies such as ground source heat pumps, thermal energy storage, and latest generation boilers and chillers working together to serve multiple downtown buildings through a delivery system of hot water and chilled water pipes from the ENGIE system.

Currently, ENGIE operates over 320 heating and cooling systems around the world in response to the long-term needs of both the public and private sectors, working to simultaneously provide reliable services while protecting the environment.

“We’re excited to be partnering with the City of Westminster to introduce services and technologies that are not fully leveraged yet in the United States. The City’s commitment to excellence and the ideal location along the Front Range makes this a landmark development that will surely be emulated nationwide,” said Jean-Luc Billiani, President and CEO of ENGIE Services Inc.

The WRED project includes working closely with Xcel Energy to streamline design options toward greater energy efficiency, reduce first costs for developers, incorporate renewable energy, and identify rebates and other financial resources to allow the downtown to be built in a more resource efficient and sustainable manner. Westminster recently signed on as a community participating in Xcel Energy’s Partners in Energy (PiE) program, further strengthening the relationship.

“As the community’s electricity and natural gas provider, we are pleased that we can help the City of Westminster reach their energy reduction goals,” added Jerome Davis, Regional Vice President for Xcel Energy – Colorado. “Xcel Energy’s expertise in providing electricity and natural gas service, renewable energy development and incentives, as well as our experience in energy efficiency program management allow us to aid the community in analyzing options enabling them to reach their goals.”

Downtown Westminster, located directly off of the US 36 and Sheridan Boulevard interchange, is situated between Boulder and downtown Denver.   The City’s dedication to excellence aligns well with ENGIE’s experience in implementing initiatives that provide efficient resource delivery as well as Smart City enhancements. Downtown Westminster, which has capacity for over 6 million vertical square feet of development, looks to provide a unique, vibrant, and authentic hub for civic, cultural and economic expansion.

“The City of Westminster is fortunate to be partnering with global sustainable energy provider ENGIE to deliver the newest district energy system in Colorado, contributing to the City’s vision to become the next urban center of the Front Range and one of the most sustainable cities in America.” Jody Andrews, Deputy City Manager.

The City of Westminster is seeking energy conscious developers and employers to connect to the new system.
