Previously, commercial accounts were charged under a two-tier rate with the separation in tiers based upon a different volume of water for each meter size. Commercial customers with a 1″ meter received a smaller volume of water in Tier 1, than a commercial customer with a 2″ meter. Unfortunately, we know that he size of the meter does not always tie to the volume of water used by a business, so this kind of rate structure did not provide equity amongst our customers.
Under the new rate structure, the city will calculate an annual water budget for each commercial account. All water use within a customer’s budget will be charged at the Tier 1 rate, and all water use in excess of the budget will be charged at the Tier 2 rate.
